About the role

Joining the Government Statistical Service (GSS) as a Data Scientist in one of our UK locations, you’ll play a pivotal role in UK government decision making. Working with a range of government departments, agencies and other public bodies, you’ll make a difference with data in areas that really matter, from education, health and the welfare system, through to transport and the environment.

With access to a variety of data sources, from government systems to big data, you’ll help government to identify, understand and ultimately solve key challenges faced by today’s society. Using advanced statistical and data science techniques, you’ll use your knowledge, curiosity and enthusiasm to produce innovative data and clear, coherent analysis. This is an incredible opportunity to help shape the direction of Data Science within the government. Not only will your work contribute to press articles and media headlines, you’ll also tell compelling, evidence-based stories about the UK. The advice and data-driven insight you produce, on people and places of the UK, will make a real difference to products and services, and have a direct impact on key decisions regarding social and economic issues.
