The UK Hydrographic Office (UKHO) produces nautical publications and services for the Royal Navy and merchant shipping, to protect lives at sea.
The work we do enables us to provide support to organisations such as the Royal Navy, a wide range of defence customers, and the Maritime and Coastguard Agency. Our hydrographic services ensure that marine data of the UK coastal waters is kept up to date, helping to support and improve safety of life at sea for all mariners.

THE ROLE
Join us as a Commercial Lead Support Engineer and we’ll look to you to help maximise availability through Incident Management and Problem Management, providing support both to users of the systems and to service delivery functions.
Your role will see you tackling a number of key challenges and tasks as you look to resolve problems, provide information, and monitor performance. You’ll be expected to support the UKHO Commercial applications and development of System Life Cycle Plan for all key systems; take overall responsibility for the Commercial Software Engineering Team’s role in the weekly update, including the release of new software versions to the live environment; and enhancing existing applications and systems.
The role will also see you helping to reduce/eliminate UKHO’s reliance on out of date/unsupported software; provide technical advice to internal and external customers; analyse customer requirements and problems; document changes to the system and application architecture overviews; and develop relationships with System Owner, Key Users and Users for their allocated systems.
WHAT YOU’LL NEED TO JOIN US
We expect you’ll already have an abundance of skills, qualities and attributes, but there are some that we look for in particular. You’ll need to be familiar with techniques for streamlining business processes which have been modeled and understood, for example, error-proofing, value added assessment, process cycle time reduction, future-proofing, resilience, reliability, cost effectiveness. We’ll also expect you to be familiar with business continuity concepts such as the methods and techniques for risk management, business impact analysis, countermeasures and contingency arrangements relating to the serious disruption of IT services.
Your experience should be just as impressive with your expert knowledge of planning and organising, directing others to undertake tasks, thinking creatively, making decisions, and checking progress against targets.
As well as all this you’ll also need experience of ISO 9000-based corporate quality processes; software development; and the ability to produce and utilise test plans and test scripts/specifications.
