The Role

Capita Defence & Security Resourcing (CDSR) is exclusively delivering IT infrastructure projects to the defence sector.

We are currently supporting a major recruitment drive and expansion plans to recruit a highly talented and experienced SQL DBA Specialist to join an existing DBA team that is undergoing a major growth phase.

Reporting into an onsite DBA Team Leader, the role will primarily be based out of Cumbria, and candidates may be expected to travel within the UK on an ad-hoc basis.

The role is predominately MS SQL Server however working knowledge of Oracle RDBMS would be advantageous as the customer uses both technologies.

The role requires participation in an on-call scheme as the team operates a call out rota 24/7x365 where overtime is funded. This includes attending onsite for call out for secure clients on occasion.

The role requires candidates to have SC Clearance ideally but will consider candidates who are eligible to attain SC level clearance.

Project deliverables and responsibilities

* Input into the design and specification process to ensure best practice and standardisation of database builds

* Install and configure SQL Server/Oracle on single servers and clusters on physical and virtual (VMWare) environments

* Using available tools (built in or 3rd party) and working with application support teams and vendors, health check SQL Server/Oracle environments and propose recommendations for performance tuning and optimisation

* Working with, or as part of, cross-functional technical project teams, assist solution and technical architects to design scalable, performant and secure SQL Server/Oracle installations

* Contribute to capacity planning and sizing estimates

* Set up:

* backup and restore strategies

* disaster recovery procedures

* monitoring and alerting

* Impact assess change documents to identify deliverables and commercial impact

* Keep abreast of new functionality that can be exploited by support teams and applications teams to enhance the operability and/or performance

* Contribute to the development of team processes, procedures and documentation and other continuous improvement initiatives

The Candidate

For this role, we are seeking the MS SQL / Oracle DBA Specialist who can demonstrate the following skills, experience and attributes:

* SC Clearance or eligible to obtain SC Clearance.

* Proven experience with installation, configuration and performance tuning of SQL Server 2000, 2005, SQL Server 2008, SQL Server 2012, SQL Server 2014.

* Proven experience with installation, configuration and performance tuning of Oracle RDBMS versions 7-12 would be highly beneficial

* MS SQL Server/Oracle Certification

* Good experience of SQL "Always On" would be highly beneficial.

* Excellent English communication skills (written and verbal)

* Excellent customer interaction skills

* Excellent organisation and time management skills
