A fantastic opportunity has arisen within the University of Bristol IT Services Division for an experienced IT Information Architect. We are looking for someone to join our expanding IT Governance function to lead and shape the direction of IT Information and Data Architecture within the institution.

The Information Architect is the effective Head of Information Architecture for the University and the leading expert in this highly specialised field. The post holder's main responsibilities will be focused on the design, implementation and dissemination of the University’s information and data architecture, with its reliance on enterprise wide data and interfaces with application and technology architectures. The Information Architect is viewed as a strategic leader in the University, taking a holistic view of the organisation. The post holder will ensure that the IT information, data and data storage architecture is fit-for-purpose in supporting the organisation's strategy, information/data flow and processes, whilst also taking into account possible opportunities brought by trends in new technology. It is expected that the planning horizon for strategies will be between 3-5 years.

The successful candidate will:

- Direct the development of the University wide data and information architecture.

- Create a fluid, end-to-end vision of how data will flow through the organization.

- Ensure that existing organisational data is available to emerging systems and services in such a way that the data can be reused as accurately as possible without sacrificing flexibility.

- Develop, establish and communicate standards and policies for the selection of appropriate data models.

- Direct the development of the data, data storage and identity management architectures to ensure the required performance, availability, scalability, security, re-usability, flexibility, data recovery, reliability, etc. of the University’s underpinning IT systems.

- Provides advice and guidance to project teams - specifically architects, developers and database designers to ensure that the selected logical data models and data integration approaches are consistent with policies and standards.

Qualifications:

- Educated to degree level bachelor’s degree in computer science, computer engineering or a related field.

Knowledge and skills:

- A broad understanding of higher education and the processes within the sector.

- Extensive knowledge of data management, big data developments, systems analysis and technology architectures.

- Proficient in the techniques that go into producing designs of complex systems, including requirements discovery and analysis, formulation of solution context, identification of solution alternatives and their assessment, technology selection, and design.

- Should have working knowledge of an architecture design framework such as TOGAF

- Influencing skills at all levels. The Information Architect must have strong communications and relationship skills. A major task of the Information Architect is to communicate complex technical information to all stakeholders including those who do not have a technical background.

Experience:

- Significant experience of working in IT in a large and complex environment, has spent at least five years in architecture.

- Experience of developing policies, procedures and standards.
