About the role

What makes working here special? Lots of things. Millions of people rely on our digital services to make important decisions. So, every piece of your work, every effort you make will have a tangible impact on lives - from how people report hazardous waste to how people monitor and report flood risks, and protect their homes and families. We are constantly evolving to improve how we meet our customers’ diverse needs online, which calls for new thinking and bold innovation. Joining us on this significant journey of change, your ideas will be valued and your voice heard as you deliver impactful solutions that will build a digital future for Defra and our customers.

As Digital Developer, you’ll develop digital online services that are used by millions of customers across the country. You’ll work in an agile way, keeping customers front of mind to ensure that the services are easily accessible, always reliable and meet diverse user needs. An important role? Absolutely. Your well-thought-out ideas, technical expertise and drive will shape the future of our unique digital services. Playing a key role in a talented and diverse team, you’ll write, adapt, maintain and enhance code that is flexible, reusable and device agnostic. We’ll look to you to collaborate and communicate with a range of stakeholders across the Defra group, taking user requirements and creating effective digital products that deliver on what’s needed. This is an exciting opportunity to make your mark, share your ideas and help us adopt new technologies and ways of working, as you help to create a better place for people to live.

About you

A skilled developer, you’ll have extensive experience in delivering flexible, device agnostic digital services, APIs and modern, responsive web applications. We use a range of languages here including Ruby and Node.js so a detailed knowledge of one of these and/or Java is ideal. However there will be opportunities to cross-skill on a variety of new technologies. If you’ve previously integrated solutions with SAAS, even better. Just like us, you’ll have a passion for continuous improvement and you’ll enjoy applying technical expertise to solve problems, share best practices and deliver effective solutions. You’re analytical and innovative in your approach but able to communicate technical concepts clearly and comprehensively to non-technical audiences. It’s important that you’re confident building strong relationships in a diverse team that use agile methodologies and behavioural driven development processes. Right now, you’re likely to be looking for a new technical challenge somewhere that you can use your skills to really make an impact - and you’re on just the right page.

About the rewards

In return for your hard work, we offer a highly competitive package which includes a career average pension scheme, a commitment to flexible working and a wide range of other benefits. We believe the biggest reward of all is having the opportunity to make a real difference to the environment. We’re committed to continued professional development and we’ll encourage you to progress and expand expertise in our fast-paced environment.
