About the role

What makes working here special? Lots of things. Millions of people rely on our digital services to make important decisions. So, every piece of your work, every effort you make will have a tangible impact on lives - from how people report hazardous waste to how people monitor and report flood risks, and protect their homes and families. We are constantly evolving to improve how we meet our customers’ diverse needs online, which calls for new thinking and bold innovation. Joining us on this significant journey of change, your ideas will be valued and your voice heard as you deliver impactful solutions that will build a digital future for Defra and our customers.

To develop and deliver digital services that our wide-ranging customers will use and rely upon, it’s crucial that we have a deep understanding of their needs. That’s exactly where this important role as User Research comes in. Working with a core delivery team of digital experts, internal colleagues and external customers, you’ll gain a clear and meaningful understanding of users and the business. It’ll be up to you to draw on a range of research and analysis techniques to capture, represent and articulate user needs, and make sure that our digital services being designed in line with these. How can we make sure that the services we develop are based on what our customers want? How can we keep customers at the heart of the delivery process? As a subject matter expert, your role will be pivotal to this and you’ll make sure that accessibility and user needs feed in every stage of delivery.

About you

In addition to being experienced in planning, designing and conducting user research - both in early stage concept and service delivery - you’ll need to be an excellent communicator and a great people person. You’ll be able to show us how you’ve used research and analysis techniques to gain a deep understanding of users’ needs and then worked with designers and developers to turn user data into actionable solutions that feed into services. You’re as passionate about clear user journeys and user-centred design practices as you are about collaboration and continuous improvement. You’ll have worked well in an agile environment with diverse teams to create effective digital services. If you’ve previously contributed to web content, transactional services or delivered in line with GDS standards, even better.

About the rewards

In return for your hard work, we offer a highly competitive package which includes a career average pension scheme, a commitment to flexible working and a wide range of other benefits. We believe the biggest reward of all is having the opportunity to make a real difference to the environment. We’re committed to continued professional development and we’ll encourage you to progress and expand expertise in our fast-paced environment.
