About the role

What makes working here special? Lots of things. Millions of people rely on our digital services to make important decisions. So, every piece of your work, every effort you make will have a tangible impact on lives - from how people report hazardous waste to how people monitor and report flood risks, and protect their homes and families. We are constantly evolving to improve how we meet our customers’ diverse needs online, which calls for new thinking and bold innovation. Joining us on this significant journey of change, your ideas will be valued and your voice heard as you deliver impactful solutions that will build a digital future for Defra and our customers.

In this crucial role of Web Operations Engineer, it’ll be down to you to take the lead on our day-to-day operations as we transform our digital services for the Defra group and our wide-ranging customers. You’ll work with colleagues across Defra to keep our services online and make sure they’re continually meeting customer needs. This will involve maintaining robust relationships with technical specialists and business leaders to provision servers based on user and service requirements. Your responsibilities will be varied and while two days are unlikely to be the same, every one will be interesting. Your influence and expertise will be highly valued as you help us define outstanding systems, networks and platform configurations that achieve a diverse range of business objectives.

About you

Coming to us from a similar role with significant experience in leading web operations, you’ll have a solid track record of configuring and operational management and a good working knowledge of cloud-hosting services (in particular PaaS, IaaS, SaaS). If you have an understanding of the Government’s ‘Cloud First’ policy, even better. From systems and scripting to networks and automated deployment, you’ll combine strong technical skills, and an understanding of tools like Puppet, Chef and Ansible, with the collaborative nature needed to oversee digital operations. You’re a skilled leader and confident communicator, able to build excellent working relationships with developers and designers using agile methods and continuous delivery practices. Right now, it’s likely that you’re looking for an exciting new challenge and the chance to use your experience to make a real impact.

About the rewards

In return for your hard work, we offer a highly competitive package which includes a career average pension scheme, a commitment to flexible working and a wide range of other benefits. We believe the biggest reward of all is having the opportunity to make a real difference to the environment. We’re committed to continued professional development and we’ll encourage you to progress and expand expertise in our fast-paced environment.
