Connect the data to discover the vital intelligence.

When presented with a diverse and vast amount of data, most people will be overwhelmed, not knowing where to start. Some, however, will already be thinking about how to connect relevant information together, spotting links and patterns others wouldn’t see.

If that’s you, apply for our Intelligence and Data Analyst Development Programme, where you’ll learn how to connect the data, making sense of vital intelligence. You won’t just have a rewarding and challenging career; you’ll help us protect the UK from threats such as terrorism, espionage and cyber attack.

The programme

Through a number of postings, the programme puts you at the heart of MI5. Your role will see you use the latest technology and techniques, analysing a vast array of complex and ever changing data.

Critically, you’ll then translate this to your non-technical colleagues in a way that they will understand, providing essential information that helps them direct their work. Because operational decisions could be made based on your findings, it’s vital to explain the strength of your assessments. It’s a fast moving and exciting role, with plenty of opportunity for development and progression, either into management or as a subject specialist.

About you

You’ll need a minimum of a 2:2 degree in any subject, or relevant work experience. While a numerate background is useful, it isn’t vital. The key point is that you need to demonstrate your ability to work with large and complex sets of data.

Our analysts routinely work with data sets containing dozens of variables and numerous rows in order to produce evidence-based conclusions and recommendations. Prior experience of working with data of this vast complexity isn’t essential. However, you’ll need to demonstrate evidence of working with data containing a number of variables, utilising methods of analysis that don’t rely solely on manual processing.

Examples of working with incomplete or ambiguous data would be advantageous. Just as important, you’ll be a proactive and creative thinker, with the ability to adapt to different requirements and to spot patterns that others often miss.

Data is everywhere. Make sense of it, starting now.
