Summary of Role:

Your duties will span the whole discipline of project management including scope, schedule, finance, risk, quality and resources; and will encompass the entire project lifecycle from proposal to project completion. You will typically be leading complex safety critical engineering projects, delivering systems, software and safety engineering services in a wide range of industries. Your project teams will often be international, sometimes co-located and sometimes working on multiple sites.

Responsibilities will include:

Ensuring that clients and project teams share a common understanding of project objectives;

Defining and managing project scope, including change control and configuration management;

Ensuring that the project budgets are defined and sustainable;

Preparing and maintaining project plans and schedules;

Selecting, developing, leading and disbanding teams, including working with the Resource Manager to manage resource allocations to your project to satisfy the project commitments;

Identifying and managing risks and issues; monitoring, resolving and escalating as appropriate;

Managing project finances, including budgeting, invoicing, expenditure, overtime and expenses;

Establishing and maintaining effective, regular communication with and reporting to stakeholders including the client, the Portfolio Manager and the project team;

Working with work package managers to integrate their detailed plans with the overall project plan, as appropriate;

Managing subcontractors as needed;

Building and maintaining a strong culture of delivering value to clients;

Other activities as deemed appropriate by the Portfolio Managers.

Education and Training:

A bachelor’s degree or equivalent

Eligible for APM Full Member status (MAPM)

APM Practitioner Qualification or equivalent skills and experience

Experience

You will be a high calibre, talented individual who is able to demonstrate a commitment to developing your career in project management. You will already have substantial experience of direct project management on the full lifecycle gained preferably on projects conducting Embedded Software Development, Systems Engineering, or Safety Engineering to applications in a Safety Critical context.

You will have well-developed interpersonal skills such as leadership, delegation, communication and conflict management, and will be able to lead and motivate your project teams.

You will have an in depth understanding of the project management principles and have good knowledge of the Waterfall and ‘V’ models; experience of agile methods would also be an advantage.

You will be able to demonstrate having delivered projects in complex commercial environments, such as Integrated Project Teams, consortia, or other integrated client/supplier collaborations, and will have an appreciation for the challenges and opportunities that these delivery structures bring. You will have an understanding of the challenges of delivering multi-site and multi-national projects.

You will have worked in one of more of the Rail, Aerospace, Defence or Nuclear industry sectors, and as a result have a good understanding of the associated regulatory constraints.

You will have strong problem solving and analytical skills, be a good communicator (written and verbal), have excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to quickly build rapport with others, be self-motivated and able to use initiative, be organised with good time management and prioritisation.

You will be supported in evaluating your training needs, which will be addressed through a mixture of on-the-job training, and formal project management training. Skills & Knowledge & Behavioural Competencies:

Understanding of Highly Regulated and/or Safety Critical Industries;

Knowledge of project management methodologies and bodies of knowledge such as PRINCE2, the Praxis Framework, PMBOK, APMBOK etc.

Delivered projects in complex commercial environments;

Experienced and competent in the use of project planning tools including Primavera, MS Project, or equivalent;

MS Word, Excel, and Outlook;

Knowledge of systems and software development approaches including Waterfall, ‘V’ and agile lifecycles;

Meticulous planning skills with highly developed organisational and time management skills;

Able to present ideas successfully with strong negotiation and persuasion skills;

Practiced in managing multiple technical projects simultaneously from bid / design stages to implementation;

In depth knowledge of the Shipley bid winning process or similar would be an advantage;

High quality standards with focus on service delivery and exceeding customers’ expectations;

Strong analytical and numerical skills able to produce workable solutions to problems;

Excellent attention to detail and written communication skills;

Flexible, able to adapt to changing client and/or business needs;

Basic understanding of contract law in the engineering services industry;

Budgeting and cost management;

Risk, opportunity and issue management;

Candidates should be willing to undertake the security vetting process and be Security Cleared at the point employment.
