NPL are currently looking for a candidate to work with NPLTime® and the Time and Frequency group delivering precise time over fibre. The group is responsible for the UK’s timescale. UTC(NPL) and the development of quantum frequency standards, including NPL-CsF2, our caesium fountain, accurate to a second in 158 million years.

This is a growth area for NPL and would involve working on projects nationally and Internationally.

Responsibilities will include:-

- Install, commission, maintain and manage network timing systems at NPL and remote locations

- Develop testbeds and systems

- Deliver time characterisation and calibration services both in house and at customer sites

- Resolve all incidents with a methodical approach to fault diagnosis and resolution

- Attend sites if and when required (global), key part of the support team.

- Interface with the customer and provide solutions to their faults

- Optical transmission equipment support as a secondary role supporting WDM products

Skills and experience required:-

- Background in Telecommunications/Electronics/Electrical

- Experience of Ethernet and Fibre Optic network infrastructure and operations, resilience protocols (HSRP, VRRP) desirable.

- Additional experience of network timing (PTP, NTP, GPS) and synchronisation (SyncE) would be highly desirable

- Optical products technical training on WDM

- Hands on experience of telecom networks, ethernet deployment, and optical fibre transmission.

- Analytical skills to assist in fault resolution

- Experience with network management software desirable

- Experience in test and measurement desirable

- Good customer relations and communications skills

- Excellent attention to detail

- At all times maintain a professional image

- Can-do attitude with flexibility to accept on-site work and associated travelling.

Requirements:-

- Full driving licence

- Proof of eligibility to work in the UK

- Security clearances (higher level) will be required and applied for.
