About the Foreign & Commonwealth Office

The Foreign & Commonwealth Office (FCO) promotes the United Kingdom's interests overseas, supporting our citizens and businesses around the globe. The FCO has a worldwide network of embassies and consulates, employing over 14,000 people in nearly 270 diplomatic offices. We work with international organisations to promote UK interests and global security, including the EU, NATO, the United Nations, the UN Security Council and the Commonwealth.

The role of Head of FCO Data Science

It’ll be down to you to establish the FCO’s new data science capability. That means we’ll look to you to lead the new data science team and advise senior stakeholders on the sound use of data - ensuring that data science capability is integrated into wider Whitehall work. Providing insight to improve policy making, you’ll evaluate the impact of Her Majesty’s Government (HMG) interventions and help predict future instability, threats and opportunity for prosperity.

A rewarding, influential, ever-evolving role

This is a role at the cutting edge of foreign policy and a truly unique opportunity to make a real impact on the world. By exploiting privileged government data, you’ll enable the FCO to maintain its strategic advantage, transforming it into the world’s first data driven Foreign Ministry.

What we are looking for

Along with your Masters Level analytical degree, you’ll have substantial experience of data science - including practice in Python or R. A self-starter who can deliver, you’ll use your data science expertise to build networks with leading data science players and have the confidence to deal with challenges from senior stakeholders. An understanding of Regression Analysis, Natural Language Processing and Sentiment Analysis is key - and you’ll also need to be familiar with classification methods.

There will also be opportunities for foreign travel and for participating in and speaking at international conferences.
