The role entails

The Company is a leading provider of satellite data communications services in Europe, the Middle East and Africa with significant international spectrum rights and a network covering over one billion people.

The Group has designed and launched a new generation of high throughput Ka band geostationary satellites, in order to address an estimated market opportunity of over $11 billion per annum across EMEA. These satellites, together with Avanti’s highly resilient Ground Earth Stations and proprietary Cloud software management system, are able to deliver levels of performance, service and resilience that have been previously unmatched in the industry.

Main duties and responsibilities

- Perform spacecraft operations for Avanti’s growing fleet of geosynchronous satellites (HYLAS 1, HYLAS 2, and ARTEMIS in flight, HYLAS 3 and HYLAS 4 in the pipeline). Activities include, among others, orbit determination, manoeuvre planning, propellant accounting

- Liaise with other teams to ensure smooth operations

- Implement station-keeping and co-location strategies

- Run offline analyses on the spacecraft status and performances, including but not limited to co-location activities, mass consumption estimation, life-time estimation. Code new software tools as required

- Write, test, run, and update operational procedures

- Perform simulations to analyse relevant operational scenarios (e.g. relocations, collision avoidance, end-of-life de-orbit)

- Prepare the handover to the company of all post-LEOP operations of the future satellites of the fleet

- Propose and implement improvements to the operational activities

- Provide support to the FD manager in all daily activities

In addition to the above responsibilities, the jobholder is required to perform other reasonable duties as assigned by the supervisor/line manager from time to time.

Skills and qualifications required

- Clear thinking

- Attention to details and self discipline

- Excellent command of the English language

- Proven academic and/or professional experience in orbit determination and/or manoeuvre optimization

- Undergraduate degree in mathematics, physics, astronomy, or aerospace engineering

- Deep, demonstrable understanding of Newtonian physics and orbital mechanics

- Wide mathematical background, including but not limited to: differential calculus, matrix algebra, SRIF, spherical geometry, rocket equation

- Good programming and scripting skills, complemented by the willingness to learn new software languages

- Open-mindedness

- Proven capability of both working independently under limited supervision and in a team

- Eagerness to learn, to admit and correct mistakes, and to share knowledge

- Ambition to thrive professionally and personally

Desirable skills

- Master’s degree in a relevant field

- Proven academic and/or professional experience in perturbation theory, Kalman filtering, covariance analysis
