Salary range: £31,115 to £39,004 dependent on experience.

Fixed-term 3 years.

A postdoctoral position is available in Computational Genomics at the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute under the leadership of Dr Daniel Gaffney.

The long-term goal of the lab is to understand how genetic changes influence gene regulation, using a combination of statistical and experimental approaches. The post-holder will develop computational methods to analyze and integrate a wide variety of high-throughput sequencing data, with the goal of understanding how variation in gene regulation and expression affects complex phenotypes and disease susceptibility. The successful applicant will also have the opportunity to directly test computational results experimentally using CRISPR/Cas9 genome editing, working with the experimental members of the group. The successful applicant will also be expected to develop his or her own research interests as the project progresses.

Candidates in Biology with a strong background in quantitative analysis and population genetics are strongly encouraged to apply. We also welcome candidates with a background in Physics, Statistics or Computer Science with strong interests in computational biology. Excellent programming skills, experience with very large data sets and an ability to work as part of a team are essential. The post-holder will work as part of the Gaffney group at WTSI.

Essential Skills

- PhD in a relevant subject area (Computational Biology, Population Genetics/Genomics, Computer Science, Physics)

- Strong publishing record

- Strong statistical and quantitative skills and familiarity with statistical modeling and software

- Excellent programming skills (C, C++, Perl, Python, Java) and extensive experience of UNIX/Linux and cluster computing

- Ability to communicate ideas and results effectively

- Ability to work well with other team members

- Ability to work to tight deadlines

Ideal Skills

- Previous experience in population genetic analysis

- Experience with analysis of -omics data sets

- Some familiarity with the stem cell biology

Postdoctoral Fellows are typically in their first or second postdoctoral position as part of a period of early career research training.
