The UK's National Physical Laboratory (NPL) sits at the intersection between scientific discovery and real world application. One of the top three National Measurement Institutes (NMIs) in the world, we now have a regional presence and strategic relationships with Surrey and Strathclyde Universities. Our expertise and original research have benefited UK citizens and the UK economy for over a century. NPL are currently looking for a candidate to work with the Time and Frequency group developing NPLTime®, NPL`s resilient certified time dissemination service over fibre, providing the underpinning for the new MiFID II European regulatory requirement for clock synchronisation in the Finance Sector. The delivery will ease the route to compliance when the regulation goes live in January 2018.

The Time and Frequency group at NPL is responsible for the UK’s timescale, UTC(NPL) and the development of atomic clocks. The successful candidate will be part of the NPLTime® delivery team but will be working closely with the time and frequesncy group.

NPLTime® is a growth area for NPL (nationally and internationally) as the resilient service completely eliminates reliance on GPS and removes susceptibility to jamming, spoofing, urban canyon effects and solar storms. It reduces the costs associated with managing a complex assortment of timing devices and the need to access roof space to locate GPS antennas. The service is applicable in several application areas and sectors including Broadcast, Gaming, Auctions, Energy, Telecom, Critical Infrastructure, Finance, Healthcare, etc.

Responsibilities will include:-

-Install, commission, maintain and manage network timing systems at NPL and remote locations

-Resolve all incidents with a methodical approach to fault diagnosis and resolution, undertaking data network fault investigations in local and wide area environments, using information from multiple sources.

-Attend sites if and when required (global), key part of the support team.

-Interface with the customer and provide solutions to their faults.

-Support the development of products and services.

-Maximise network performance by monitoring performance

-Troubleshoot network problems and outages

-Scheduling upgrades, documenting systems and processes.

-Securing network systems by establishing and enforcing policies, and defining and monitoring access.

Required skills:-

-Experience of ethernet and fibre optic network infrastructure and operations

-Hands on experience of networks, network management tools, network security.

-Data monitoring and analysis skills

-Good customer relations and communications skills

-Excellent attention to detail

-Can-do attitude with flexibility to accept on-site work and associated travelling

Desirable skills:-

-Engineering degree in Telecommunications/Electronics/Electrical Engineering

-Experience of network timing (PTP, NTP) and synchronisation (SyncE)

-Optical products technical training on SDH & DWDM

-Experience with Linux-based embedded systems

-Experience in quality systems and processes

Essential Requirements:-

Full driving licence

British citizen

Security clearances (higher level) will be required and applied for Based in a unique, purpose-built research environment, we are located in beautiful surroundings on the edge of Bushy Park, south-west London with a host of onsite facilities.
