Random International are looking for a software engineer/coder/developer to join the studio to create unique applications for interactive installations both large and small.
Random International is a collaborative studio for experimental practice within contemporary art. Founded in 2005 by Hannes Koch and Florian Ortkrass, the studio now includes a team of about 20. Questioning aspects of identity and autonomy in the post-digital age, Random International’s work invites active participation and is held in the collections of MoMA, LACMA and Victoria & Albert Museum, where their Swarm Study / III is on long-term display.
Candidates should have an active interest in:
- coding for real world and physical applications
- understanding how people and machines interact with each other
- computer vision and working in 3D
- programming real-time applications such as games and simulations
Experience with, or understanding of, some or all of the following technologies is desirable:
- C# / .net / Mono
- XNA / MonoGame
- serial and network communications
- a working understanding of embedded systems and 'real world' interfaces is desirable but not mandatory
- other frameworks for creative coding such as Unity, VVVV, openFrameworks
The role involves working closely with the artists and design team on the realisation and delivery of increasingly ambitious, large-scale projects. The candidate will report to the senior developer and head of technology. Tasks would include the following:
- examining existing software and determining requirements for new and modified projects
- undertaking feasibility studies to design software solutions
- writing individual programs according to specifications
- developing user interfaces
- testing and correcting software programs
- writing code for specialist programming of interactive artworks (for example, artificial intelligence, 3D engine development)
- implementing and evaluating software
- contributing to operational documentation and providing subsequent support and training for users
- other ad hoc tasks
A hands-on attitude, meticulous attention to detail and good diagnostic / problem-solving skills are essential. The successful applicant will be able to adapt and extend their knowledge as projects dictate and work effectively individually and as part of a team and lunch is provided 4 days a week for you!
