Taking on a portfolio of strategic data projects, you will play a key part in expanding the Intelligence and Insight Unit of a unique organisation at the heart of how healthcare is practiced in the UK.

The General Medical Council (GMC) helps to protect patients and improve medical education and practice in the UK by setting standards for students and doctors. We support them in achieving (and exceeding) those standards, and take action when they are not met.

Providing statistical and modelling expertise across the GMC, your important work to update, develop and apply our data will enable us to better predict risks and harms. What’s more, you will identify new opportunities to improve our understanding and use of data.

Your varied responsibilities will range from updating and quality assuring our risk modelling, to reviewing and cleaning datasets for modelling, to carrying out analysis and modelling in answer to new research questions. Colleagues will value your support in identifying, designing and implementing high value analytic projects and deciding the appropriate statistical techniques to use. Crucially, you’ll also help to target our interventions, to ensure GMC interventions deliver the greatest benefits.

To be equal to the challenge, you’ll need a degree in a numerate subject, together with an MSc or PhD in a discipline with significant statistical content. Alternatively, you may have a substantial level of experience as a professional statistician and data scientist. You will certainly be qualified in the building of predictive data models using R, with significant practical experience. Your modelling skills span techniques like logistic, stepwise and decision tree regression. Experience of designing relational databases using SQL, and data visualisations using tools like Tableau, is also vital. As important as your technical abilities will be a flair for communication and relationship building.

In return, you’ll benefit from being part of an organisation that is genuinely committed to its people. We offer an attractive salary and benefits package.

Closing date: Tuesday 24 January 2017 by midnight. Late applications will not be accepted.

Assessment date: Wednesday 8 February 2017 in London.
