Role overview

This is a key role within the development team building advanced web software solutions for our online utilities business.

With now in excess of 900,000 customers, this role sits in the team who are responsible for delivering technical solutions for projects mainly associated with the customer ‘my account’ area accessed from the First Utility website. In addition to this projects will cut across a wide set of solution domains including on-line registrations, customer self-serve, single customer view, mediation, rating and billing.

You will be working within a highly agile team, who are tasked with producing an exceptional web experiences for the company’s external and internal customers. The applications are designed to engage the user to interact with the business easily and we are always working towards cutting edge customer experience.

Areas of specific responsibility

- To maintain a strong subject matter expertise, and develop your expertise further through professional development. We give you 12 research days a year to help you on your way, and we look forward to knowledge sharing sessions where you tell us all about what you have learnt.

- Maintain and build upon your knowledge of popular client-side technologies (React would be helpful) along with the capabilities to apply these and deliver maintainable, production ready code which is highly performant and works well across multiple browsers and devices

- With a good understanding of the importance of standards across a large development team, we expect you to be actively involved in contributing to and making our standards even better.

- We really value the test-driven approach to developing code and strive to ensure that developers fall in love with testing the code they produce.

- Working as part of a team and communicating with other people across the organisation is really important, so you’ll have a mix of great technology skills combined with excellent written and verbal communication skills.

The desirable candidate will have

Essential

- Proven experience in delivering web experiences

- HTML5 and associated API’s

- CSS and SASS pre-processor

- Javascript experience (not just jQuery)

- Responsive, Mobile first web design as an approach

- UI/UX development Experience

- Website performance experience

- Excellent team working and communication skills

Desirable

- React (or other front-end MVC frameworks

- ES6 and related ES5 compilers i.e. Babel

- Webpack, browserify (or any front end packaging frameworks)

- Grunt, Gulp

- Node

- OOCSS, BEM, SMACSS

- Javascript unit testing

- Automated testing frameworks

- Adobe Photoshop for extracting and modifying assets as required

- An eye for design and/or UX would be very advantageous.

- Knowledge and experience of automated or multi-platform testing

- A working understanding of PHP applications and PHP Frameworks (Yii, Zend, Symfony)
