Can you find what doesn’t want to be found?

At MI5, we help protect the UK from threats to national security. We work against everything from terrorism and espionage, to cyber threats and sabotage. It’s a complex task, which is why we need the country’s finest minds to join us.

About the role

MI5’s Cyber Technical Analysts play a vital role in investigations against hostile actors conducting cyber espionage against the UK. You will carry out complex technical analysis, develop new capabilities and perform a unique technical investigator role in this varied and pivotal role.

You’ll dig deep to find what doesn’t want to be found. It’s about understanding the bigger picture, but also discovering the details that truly matter. Essentially, you’ll use your problem-solving skills to unearth vital information that helps us to protect the nation.

With your network and host-based forensic analysis skills, you’ll identify malicious software, traffic or activity to help our wider investigations. For any malicious samples retrieved, you’ll have the opportunity to perform independent malware analysis and reverse engineering (both static and dynamic) to understand them further. You’ll be required to write concise, high-quality reports on your findings - communicating complex technical information clearly to non-technical audiences.

Could you spot what others don’t? Would you keep going to find what doesn’t want to be found? That’s what it takes to thrive in this role. In return, you’ll get a highly rewarding career. One with an excellent work/life balance and the satisfaction of knowing that your role impacts the safety of 65 million people.

About you

Proactive and curious, you’ll have a creative and thorough approach to analysis, and an ability to handle changing priorities. Working alongside a like-minded team, you’ll share ideas, and always look for ways to develop your skillset. Strong networking knowledge is a must as is an in-depth understanding of IT/Cyber security, including cryptography, firewalls, vulnerability research, and related technologies. Successful candidates must also have sound programming skills.

Demonstrable experience in network analysis, forensics, malware analysis, penetration testing, or vulnerability/exploits, would be highly advantageous.
