SUMMARY

Researchers at the Crick are operating over 10,000 pieces of scientific equipment. It is vital that equipment is well maintained and returned to service quickly following breakdown. The Scientific Equipment Care Service provides high quality, responsive, and cost effective, in-house service to maintain and repair scientific equipment, minimising disruption to scientific operations in the event of equipment failure.

As a multi-skilled engineer, you will be responsible for making sure scientific equipment functions normally, via preventative or reactive maintenance. This could involve work on electrical, electronic or mechanical systems.

The post-holder will answer to the Scientific Equipment Care Lead. This role involves significant levels of communication with scientific research and operational staff, as well as the Instrument Prototyping Platform and the Hard FM provider.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

These include but are not limited to;

- Carrying out reactive maintenance, diagnosing faults and repairing equipment

- Checking and calibrating instruments to make sure they are accurate

- Carrying out preventative maintenance and fitting new parts

- Carrying out quality and safety inspections

- Recording "helpdesk" calls and responding to scientific equipment breakdowns

- Identifying, sourcing and procuring components

- Modifying and adapting equipment when required and assisting with research prototypes.

- Keeping scientists and laboratory managers informed of progress

- Recording all activities relating to individual pieces of equipment via the asset management software

- Maintaining a stock of critical spares

KEY EXPERIENCE AND COMPETENCIES

The post holder should embody and demonstrate our core Crick values: Bold, Imaginative, Open, Dynamic and Collegial, in addition to the following:

Essential:

- A qualification in a relevant electronic and electrical engineering discipline such as City and Guilds or BTec ONC

- Experience of electronic and electrical fault-finding and repair of a wide range of devices, down to component level

- Good communication skills, both written and oral

- Ability to explain technical issues to non-technical personnel

- Positive attitude and work ethic

- Attention to detail

- Ability to work without supervision

- Flexibility and a willingness to learn

- Physically capable, as the role involve some moderate lifting / manual handling

Desirable:

- Experience and a qualification in Inspection and Testing of Electrical equipment (Portable Appliance Testing)

- Any relevant qualifications or experience working with mechanical or refrigerant systems

- Previous roles in a scientific or healthcare environment

- Ability to adapt to new technologies and learn new skills

- Awareness of health and safety issues including Biological and Radioactive hazards
