About the Foreign & Commonwealth Office
The Foreign & Commonwealth Office (FCO) promotes the United Kingdom's interests overseas, supporting our citizens and businesses around the globe. The FCO has a worldwide network of embassies and consulates, employing over 14,000 people in nearly 270 diplomatic offices. We work with international organisations to promote UK interests and global security, including the EU, NATO, the United Nations, the UN Security Council and the Commonwealth.
The role of Data Scientist
Joining the FCO’s new data science team, you will pioneer and promote the better use of data in the Foreign Office. By advising a range of stakeholders on the sound use of data, you will ensure that data science is integrated into wider Whitehall work and used in the most innovative and impactful way. You will be at the heart of the FCO, helping shape the way in which we deliver policy both at home and overseas. Understanding, responding to and delivering on the needs of your customers, you will build and maintain strong networks within the FCO, with partners across Government and in the private sector, both nationally and internationally. We would like you to work across a range of themes, including influence and networks, forecasting, knowledge management, open source intelligence and evaluation of FCO policies and campaigns. This is a unique opportunity to substantially influence the FCO’s work.
What we are looking for
A self-starter, you are also an experienced data science professional with a strong focus on delivery. It goes without saying that you are able to produce clear and persuasive communications that are effective in reaching targeted audiences and impact positively on business outcomes. We would also like to see where you have monitored and evaluated the success of previous projects against clear and measurable objectives. As a data science specialist, you will enjoy maintaining and expanding your data science knowledge base and building network with other data science players. With excellent attention to detail, you will have good communication skills and work well in a team. You will also enjoy seeing the results of your decisions.
