Who we are

Manchester is one of the most extensive higher education centres in Europe and the most popular city for students in the UK. We are at the heart of it, delivering cutting-edge skills to people from 120 countries - 94% of whom go into work or further study within six months of graduating. Since 2006, we have invested £350 million into our exceptional campus to deliver our vision of being the best modern university, and we continue to achieve and innovate every day.

Where you’ll work:

With more than 200 people, our Technical Services team supports academics, researchers and students in laboratory, workshop and field settings, and underpins our teaching, research, enterprise and public engagement activities. Committed to continuous improvement, the team assists us in delivering an exceptional student experience and is central to our continued success. With increased research taking place in Computer Science and Engineering disciplines, the team is growing fast, creating exciting opportunities for personal and professional development.

About the role:

Whilst you will provide routine and specialist support services within Science and Engineering Laboratories, you will primarily be involved in developing, delivering and supporting systems for new University-wide ‘Big Data’ research projects. At the same time, you will assist us in implementing HPC across the Faculty of Science and Engineering, giving you profound impact on the way we work and deliver our courses and research opportunities.

About You:

An enthusiastic and motivated IT professional, you will bring wide-ranging systems administration experience, including Linux. This will have given you good shell scripting skills, knowledge of HPC cluster management (ideally including the ROCKS distribution) and familiarity with installing and configuring Hadoop clusters. Naturally, you should be adept at delivering projects on time and within budget, capable of supporting students and developing their technical skills, and able to manage and prioritise a conflicting workload.
