Shaping the success of an ambitious, market leading data platform, you’ll relish your role as a very hands-on Principal Software Engineer (DPP) in the brand new Sainsbury’s Data & Analytics Centre of Excellence.

Right now, we’re making big investments in digital innovation so we can get the most from our wealth of customer, colleague and commercial data. Across a host of bold projects, we’re seeking to change the game in retail and deliver more than ever for our customers. We’ve built a centralised data platform in the Cloud, which allows business users to make better and faster decisions, supported by accurate and up-to-date data. You’ll take this vital mission to the next level.

As Principal Cloud Engineer (DPP), you’ll lead the design, build, and automate activities for our data platform. Working closely with other Data Engineers, Data Scientists and DevOps Engineers, you’ll create a highly scalable, highly secure and high performing platform for all kinds of data. In this senior role you’ll design, test and deploy large scale distributed systems and design smart, secure ways of storing, analysing and processing complex data in the Cloud.

As technical lead of an agile development team, you’ll enjoy the scope to work on all kinds of fascinating and challenging projects. Big Data will have a massive influence on the future and success of Sainsbury’s - which means you will, too. Always exploring ways to change and improve the way we work, you’ll be instrumental to making the platform more stable, reducing the time it takes to make changes in the production environment, and making the environmental reproductable. You’ll change the way we interact with internal customers, too. And you’ll see the impact of your work on areas as diverse as Sales & Marketing and UX.

So what are we looking for? Familiar with Kafka, Spark, Hadoop, Hive and Impala, you’ve been involved in running and supporting every aspect of a data platform. Your experience spans everything from software development and code writing, to DevOps. Naturally, you’ll bring to the role a strong understanding of Big Data platforms in the Cloud. With impressive drive, lots of great ideas and the confidence to make strong technical decisions, you are a truly hands-on engineer. Crucially, you’ve got great communication skills, with a flair for explaining complex ideas clearly.

In return for your commitment and questing spirit, you’ll enjoy access to excellent training and support for development. Every day, you’ll exchange knowledge with talented engineers. We’re always bringing new people with fresh ideas into the team, so you can grow your skills all the time.
