Prepare the UK for life beyond the European Union.

There’s never been a more exciting time to join the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (Defra). Decisions made at here affect the whole of the United Kingdom. Responsible for the environment, the countryside and the rural economy, our diverse teams deal with a vast range of issues that profoundly impact on people’s day-to-day life.

Leaving the European Union will also have a considerable bearing on our work - with Defra affected by 25% of all EU legislation and it is crucial that we align our short- and long-term plans with the current EU exit negotiations.

Project Management is an important part of the work that is currently underway within the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra). As we prepare for the UK’s exit from the European Union, we are developing a broad selection of projects that will ensure the nation’s rural economies continue to be supported and developed. With our work overseeing the farming, fishing and food industries, plus the protection of the environment, we are now considering how digital, data and technology services within these fields will be impacted by the EU Exit. It is this arena that you will be tasked with, as you ensure that our projects are being delivered on time and within budget.

Promoting our commitment to agile working, you will oversee the work of a number of Project Managers, suppliers and contractors, maintaining the high standards expected of this team. Verifying that the projects are meeting their stated objectives, you will manage any risks and issues, and identify and manage any portfolio dependencies. With work-streams including (but not limited to) chemicals and pesticides and biosecurity, this is a thrilling and detailed challenge. As these projects will be worth several million pounds, you will need to be numerically assured, with experience of agile project management (practitioner level) in a multi-disciplinary team. With a PRINCE2 or MSP qualification (or equivalent), you will have a successful history of agile development and delivering high complexity projects. This is a unique opportunity to enhance the success of the nation’s rural economy, so if you have exceptional communication skills and can work at pace, then we’d be delighted to have you guiding our talented team.
