Applicants for Liverpool should be aware that the posts will initially be based in Bootle until our move to central Liverpool sometime between 2019 and 2021.

The teams at HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) are performing an important purpose. In order to secure the funds needed to support the UK’s benefits systems and public services, HMRC staff gather taxes and duties owed by both individuals and businesses. We endeavour to make the system as fair and easy-to-understand as possible, and we use tough measures to tackle those who deliberately try to cheat the system. As such, our work is fast-paced and varied, and is crucial to the ongoing success of the nation.

With more than 60,000 members of staff and offices all over the country, we are now going through an exciting period of transformation in which our staff will ultimately be moving into modern regional centres that will support collaborative working - but that’s just the start of our development. We are constantly looking for ways in which we can provide a better service to the public, which is why the Continuous Improvement (CI) function at HMRC offers such a tempting career path. This friendly and enthusiastic team are behind any improvements that we make to our capabilities. As such, your working day will be varied and unpredictable. One day you might be using evidence-based methods to encourage senior leaders to embed cultural changes within their team, while the next day you might be identifying ways in which our processes could be leaner and more efficient. Building capacity within HMRC employees, you will use Systems Thinking and Agile methodologies to ensure we’re achieving the desired results. Crucially, you will also play a key role in supporting the design and redesign of any processes that our customers are interacting with - so your input could play a vital part in helping members of the public file their tax returns.

As some overnight stays will be necessary, you will need to be a flexible team-player with the ability to adapt according to the needs of the business and our customers. With a genuine interest in developing a career in Continuous Improvement, you will therefore have experience of supporting change and improvement in either a frontline business delivery capacity or within a programme and project management role. With fantastic communication skills (both written and verbal) you will have the confidence to deliver a presentation, and you won’t shy away from challenging senior stakeholders when necessary. You will also be a great multi-tasker, and you will either have - or be willing to undertake the relevant training to achieve - the LCS level 1B qualification.

This is an undeniably unique opportunity to embark on a high-flying career within the Civil Service. Opening doors to the wider government, we want our staff to flourish in their roles. As such, you will have access to our skills training package, which includes the scope to gain professional accreditation through our in-house training academy. Quite simply, the CI team are the people who make the working life at HMRC so exciting - and this is your chance to join them.
