At HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) we never sit still. We’re a progressive and fast-paced team, with a mission to deliver an easy-to-understand system in which everyone can pay the taxes and duties they owe - thereby supporting the benefits system and the nation’s public services. It’s important work, particularly when we’re designing compliance into our systems and processes, allowing customers to get it right first time, while spotting mistakes and deterring fraudulent claims. Crucially, we also want to ensure that we’re working as efficiently as possible, so that the honest majority receive a high calibre service. And that’s where you come in.

Joining the Continuous Improvement (CI) function within HMRC, you will be at the forefront of helping our 60,000 employees work collaboratively. From identifying ways in which we could enhance the skills of our people, to working with designers to improve the systems that our customers use, you will use your technical expertise to deliver transformational and cultural change. Exploring process improvements at a strategic level, you will also use systems thinking and agile methodologies to ensure we’re working at full capacity and explore options when you think we could do better. With a good understanding of project management and the use of analysis tools to help you fully understand the needs of the customer and of HMRC as a whole, you will oversee projects from start to finish, sharing your expertise across other government CI departments. You will also monitor the work of HO CI Consultants as appropriate, seeing to it that any great ideas are nurtured into conclusive results and helping them develop their own skills in the process.

This is a varied role, so you will need to adapt to the current needs of the customer or business, with the flexibility to travel and occasionally stay away from home. Presentation skills are essential to the success of this role, so you will understand how best to engage with people so that you can instil a new way of thinking and drive results. A natural leader with good verbal and written communication and persuasion skills, you will have a proven track record of driving change and improvement in either a frontline business delivery role or within the context of programme and project management. You will also be meticulously organised, with the ability to juggle multiple projects and a genuine passion for developing the CI capabilities of HMRC. It would be preferable if you already have the LCS level 1C qualification, but if you don’t, we’ll support you as you undertake the necessary professional training and accreditation to secure this.

When you join HMRC, you’ll be exposed to the type of challenges that the private sector just can’t match. The scope of our works means that it affects the entire nation, making it important, interesting and career-defining. Furthermore, the CI function within HMRC is well supported by our in-house training academy and will help you find your footing in the CI functions across wider government. What is important is that you develop your full potential when you’re with us - and that is something that we’ll support every step of the way.
