The Sanger Institute, a major contributor to the work of sequencing the human genome, conducts cutting edge scientific research into genome variation in humans, human cells, pathogens and mice. IT is a core component of this research as much of this work requires the use of agile, bespoke and high performance storage, networking and compute infrastructure solutions to achieve the aims of the institute and its collaborators.

This role is within the Infrastructure Management Team and is principally focused on the resolution of incidents and service requests relating to Server, Storage and Network infrastructure. We are therefore looking for an enthusiastic and capable individual to assist in the administration and support of a complex and large scale mixed Operating System environment (Ubuntu, Red Hat and Windows).

Essential Skills

* Ability to learn quickly and show enthusiasm for understanding technologies across a wide range of infrastructure and services

* Evidence of proficiency across a range of Operating Systems e.g. Windows, MAC and Linux

* In-depth knowledge/understanding of Linux, good working knowledge of Unix/Linux applications such as package management

* High degree of communication and people skills to support staff with technical and non-technical backgrounds

* Experience of delivering high quality customer focused IT Support

* Strong problem solving/analytical skills

* Familiarity with directory services and their routine operation e.g. LDAP/AD

* Strong written skills for documentation production

* Good organizational skills

Ideal Skills

* Skills in shell/BASH scripting/scripting languages such as Python/Perl

* Experience with Networking (IP addressing), Virtualisation technologies to a working level

* Experience of configuration management supporting large scale Linux deployments e.g. CFEngine, Ansible, Puppet, Chef etc.

* Understanding of fundamental networking concepts such as switching and routing
