FIXED TERM CONTRACT UNTIL 12/05/19

We are looking for a senior C software developer to work on samtools, one of the world's most popular bioinformatics software packages. Our research in DNA and genetics produces a huge volume of data which produces many technical challenges in efficient processing and interpretation. By joining us you will help samtools meet these requirements.

The Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute is the largest genomics research center in Europe, and a world leader in using the latest DNA sequencing technologies in large-scale biomedical research. Samtools and HTSlib (http://www.htslib.org) were originally developed at the Institute and are among the world's most popular bioinformatics packages. You will work on the development of the software, and also assist with requests and contributions from the user comminity. You will also participate in initiatives such as the Global Alliance for Genomics and Health (http://genomicsandhealth.org/), which aims to define standards for storing and sharing genetic information.

Essential Skills

* Degree in a computer-related sciences or equivalent experience

* C/C++ programming

* Use of version control systems, especially git

* Excellent verbal and written communication skills

Ideal Skills

* Familiarity with the unix computing environment

* Knowledge of the data formats and protocols used in bioinformatics

* Writing autoconf macros
