The Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute conducts cutting edge genomic research on an unprecedented scale and our administration teams play a vital role in enabling and supporting our science. The CRUK Grand Challenge Mutographs of Cancer Project is currently looking for a dynamic, ambitious, and skilled Project Manager under the leadership of Professor Sir Mike Stratton. This exciting and ambitious project aims to unravel the mutational signatures that will hopefully explain the major global differences in cancer incidence, to understand the biological mechanisms underlying cancer-causing mutational processes and to explore their application towards surveillance of mutagenic exposures in human populations.

We are looking for a motivated and enthusiastic individual with a desire to develop and progress, providing dedicated and effective project management support to Professor Sir Mike Stratton

Candidates will hold a science degree and will have proven experience of working within a research environment as well as extensive experience and success of project managing large scientific projects. The successful candidate will need to take a collaborative approach to their work and we are looking for individuals who can provide an efficient administrative service and facilitate effective communication between the Programme, key internal stakeholders and external partners.

Essential Skills

* A background in the Life Sciences coupled with the ability to quickly assimilate relevant scientific and technical details

* Multi-functional team coordination

* Confidently works with all levels and functions within multi-functional organisations

* Demonstrates good networking and relationship building and the ability to effectively manage stakeholders

* Excellent track record in project management in a process driven environment

* Able to demonstrate commercial and academic understanding and appreciation

* Significant breath of experience at a project managerial level

* Proven track record of leading and implementing significant project system change

* Experience of working with commercial suppliers and external agencies

* Ability to work in a constantly changing environment with the ability to interpret management information to amend plans

* Successfully manage significant change

* Extensive knowledge of the grant application process

* Demonstrate success in delivering a number of complex projects through others on time, in budget and to agreed quality standards

* Successfully resolve a range of people related issues effectively involving formal mechanisms

* Ability to communicate complex technical concepts and analysis effectively to different organisations and audiences; accurately and concisely

* Highly developed excellent communication skills with experience of dealing with people at all levels successfully

* High level of influencing and negotiating skills

* Ability to organise, plan and prioritise a diverse range of projects to meet statutory and other deadlines typically involving other disciplines/organisations

* Flexible and adaptable to meet the needs of the Programme and potentially a broad portfolio of projects

* Proven ability to be able to deliver customer specifications

* Can demonstrate initiative, creativity, flexibility and a personal ethos of continuous improvement

* Show an ability to gain an understand of other professionals 'problem solving' requirements

* Proven organisational skills with the ability to plan and schedule effectively

Ideal Skills

* Science degree in a relevant subject [or equivalent] coupled with a good understanding of the technologies associated.

* Project Management training or qualification, e.g. MSP, Prince

* Effective in Risk Management, Change Control and Critical Path Analysis

* Ability to manage services across organisations

* Skills in financial management, budget and resources

* Familiarity with Regulatory requirements for Human samples/tissue
