We are seeking an experienced full stack Principal Java Developer to work in the development of high throughput Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS) to meet the increasing informatics needs of our world class scientific institute and collaborative projects.

We develop a large scale LIMS to assist in the tracking of scientific data generated in our labs, as well as bespoke support for our faculty groups. See http://www.sanger.ac.uk/science/groups/mouse-pipelines for more information on the work we do. Our LIMS is used to support many other groups, both within the Sanger Institute and around the world.

You will become part of a relaxed but professional software development team, with access to world class computing resources and many opportunities for furthering your knowledge of robust web development, user interface design, Java and relational databases.

This role is primarily about building robust and user-friendly software that improves efficiency and accuracy for our diverse user community. Additionally, the role involves gathering and implementing user requirements and discussing the impact of new features with the wider user groups and the development team. We develop primarily in Java using a web stack including JSP, SASS and JQuery running on Apache Tomcat with an Oracle back end.

We manage our own product support within the team and operate a ticketing system to track and manage user issues and bugs.

Essential Skills

* Master's degree or above in computer related sciences or equivalent, demonstrable work experience.

* Evidence of a high level of competence in Java, the Spring Framework and SQL query writing.

* Evidence of working within a full-stack web development environment.

* Evidence of delivering a quality product within fixed deadlines.

* Evidence of having successfully worked in a collaborative, project-focused software team.

* Highly developed problem solving skills.

Ideal Skills

* Functional understanding of JSP and usage of custom JSP tags.

* Ability to develop collaborations with internal and external groups.

* Experience of developing laboratory information management systems (LIMS) software would be beneficial but not essential.

* An understanding of basic genetic terminology as applied to model organism production would be beneficial but not essential.
