We are seeking to recruit an enthusiastic Java Developer to work within the Pathogen Informatics team at the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute. The Pathogen Informatics team develop and maintain software applications and systems to support the research activities of the Infection Genomics programme. The candidate will be responsible for updating and maintaining a set of software tools related to genome annotation and visualisation. The core responsibilities will be to develop a comprehensive test set and set up a test automation framework for these tools, update them to be compatible with the latest version of Java and package the tools for ease of distribution (e.g. with Homebrew). The candidate will also be expected to address an outstanding set of bug reports and feature requests for these tools. Finally, there will be scope for the successful candidate to drive the future directions of this project by proposing and adding new functionality to the software.

The ideal candidate will have significant experience in developing software in Java and testing frameworks for Java along with a pragmatic approach to software development. The successful candidate will work closely with the lead developers and analysts in the team so previous experience with bioinformatics/biological data is not strictly necessary.

This role would suit somebody who is looking for a new challenge and to gain experience working in the fields of bioinformatics, genome sequencing technologies, and test driven software development.

The team is based on the principles of agile development so that the software can be rapidly prototyped, updated regularly and receive rapid feedback from scientists in the Infection Genomics programme. The team employ a test-driven

development strategy for all software development projects and strongly promote open source development using Github for all software projects.

Essential Skills:

* A degree in a scientific or engineering discipline (or equivalent industrial experience)

* Significant programming experience in Java

* Experience with software testing frameworks

* Knowledge and experience of relational databases

* An ability to learn quickly on the job with excellent problem solving and analytical skills

* Must be self-motivated and proactive with ability to manage own workload effectively

* Strong interpersonal and communication skills

Ideal Skills:

* Knowledge of biological data formats, specifically annotation data formats

* Experience working with MyBatis framework

* Experience developing GUI based software

* Experience with web deployment of Java applications (JNLP)

* Experience of test driven development
