Duties & accountabilities

* Engineering new Linux-based solutions as required by business, product, or technology teams.

* Support product, development and testing teams in the application delivery process

* Improve the productivity of the Linux team through automation

* Providing production support to critical Linux/UNIX systems.

* Participation in an on-call and out-of-hours support rota

* Troubleshooting and automated configuration of application servers, web servers, mail services and other Linux services relevant to our products and services. Engaging product groups on the adoption of application best practices

* Maintaining a broad knowledge of operating systems and hardware and making recommendations on improving administration, availability, scalability, and disaster recovery of current systems.

* Documenting systems design, configuration, and administration items for the purposes of educating new hires and to provide better and consistent global support.

* Enforcing change management controls on production and QA systems.

* Coordinating with development teams for releases of in-house and third party software.

Necessary Experience:

* Solid and reputable experience as a Senior Red Hat Enterprise Linux Systems Administrator or Engineer.

* Ideally 8-10 years experience of working with UNIX-based systems.

* Experience with Red Hat Enterprise Linux, RHN Satellite, kickstart and RPM packaging.

* Advanced knowledge of automation frameworks such as Puppet or Chef

* Advanced knowledge of continuous integration tools

* Advanced knowledge of Httpd, Tomcat, JBoss and ActiveMQ

* Experience with performance and availability monitoring systems.

* Proficient UNIX shell scripting capabilities, proficiency in at least 2 scripting languages (python, ruby, perl, php).

* Advanced knowledge of version control systems (git, mercurial)

Preferable Experience:

* Experience with search and indexing technologies (Apache Lucene and Elasticsearch preferred)

* Experience with Linux HA or Veritas clustering

* Experience with central logging solutions (logstash, graylog, flume)

* Knowledge of Oracle running on HP/Linux

* Familiarity with software development lifecycles and the ability to affect substantial improvements where needed

* Understanding of layer 4-7 load balancing concepts, IP networking and switching technologies.

* Virtualisation experience with VMware or Xen

* Knowledge of PaaS and IaaS systems

* Knowledge of supporting Cisco UCS

* Knowledge of web application security, including common vulnerabilities and strategies to mitigate attacks.

Personal competencies

* Willingness to take ownership of Production issues is a must, as is the ability to provide support to other members of the team.

* Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, in the English language

* Must be able to work effectively with other Infrastructure groups, such as Network Engineers and Database Administrators. Development and testing team engagement is also essential
