They are currently looking to hire a LEAD WEB APPLICATIONS SUPPORT ENGINEER / SPECIALIST to lead a 3 strong team (London based) responsible for supporting their major online services. Based in CANARY WHARF, this role pays up to £65,000 + bonus potential, pension, health, etc.

The role

As a Lead Web Application Support Engineer / Specialist, you will be responsible for the 24x7 support of a large number of business critical web services (Java, Unix and Oracle technologies) and contributing to the development of this Application Support Function.

The team is spread in various geographical locations (including India, the USA and the UK) and the aim is to increase the capabilities of the London team.

Key responsibilities include:

- Leading the Service Operations Engineering team in the UK (5 staff) and being responsible for fostering innovation, reducing errors and organising the team to address day-to-day operational concerns;

- Coordinating the team's daily workload, overseeing production incidents/outages, coordinating and scheduling changes;

- Providing application support to the Java based online services and resolving complex technical issues for both internal and external customers;

- Collecting and reporting on availability metrics, IT capacity metrics, team workload metrics and project activities;

- Sharing in planning and leading the maintenance activities;

- Ensuring that the relevant technical support documentation is created and maintained and supporting service and infrastructure improvement initiatives.

As part of a growing team in a "startup-like" environment, you will be given the opportunity to shape the processes that are currently used and work with a variety of applications, most of which are business critical. There is also scope for automating a lot of processes currently being used.

Key skills / experience required

This role will suit someone with a creative and open minded approach to problem solving and who really understands the logic behind reverse engineering.

As a Lead Web Applications Support Engineer / Specialist, you will have experience of the following:

- Proven experience of managing technical teams in a global organisation;

- Proven experience supporting customer-facing Java web applications and web services is essential (deploying, debugging, maintaining, troubleshooting and fixing);

- Proven experience maintaining, configuring and running Unix/Linux systems (ideally RedHat flavour) is essential;

- Strong Bash or Perl scripting skills are essential (PHP will be considered as an advantage);

- Good understanding of Relational Databases;

- Knowledge of automated deployment tools (e.g. Chef / Puppet) will be considered as an advantage;

- Tomcat and Apache Web server administration, performance tuning and troubleshooting skills;

- Understanding of messaging technologies (e.g. RabbitMQ, ActiveMQ, etc.);

- Understanding of networking technologies (TCP/IP, VPN, DNS, load balancing, etc.).
