About the role

People have been accessing our beautiful places by bike as long as the National Trust has been in existence. Over the last few years there has been a renaissance in cycling and more people than ever are discovering the delights of two wheels as a way of getting to, and exploring, our properties. As such, we’re launching the Cycle Trails Programme as a joint venture with Sport England to construct and open recreational cycling trails at National Trust properties. We want to build on the success of several existing cycle trails and give people further safe places to cycle and more opportunities to get active and enjoy the great outdoors.

As our Cycle Trails Project Manager, you’ll play a lead role in the delivery of the Cycle Trails Programme, helping to place cycling firmly at the heart of our outdoors visitor experience. The first phase of the programme focuses on eleven properties and you’ll cover the South region, concentrating on the following four properties: Badbury Hall, Saltram, Osterley and Studland (Purbeck). Working as part of a dedicated and passionate project team, you’ll engage with a wide range of stakeholders - external organisations, property staff, neighbours, and colleagues across the National Trust - to gain planning permission for all properties and positively promote the programme. You’ll be a valued point of expertise, leading, motivating and advising others to ensure that they’re as enthusiastic about the project as you are. Having gained permission, we’ll look to you to procure necessary services, carefully managing the project budget, to get work on track and make sure the trails are delivered on time, on budget and to the very highest standards. Working across the four beautiful properties provides a great opportunity to share learning between sites and teams, as you deliver a project that sits at the heart of our strategy.

About you

Having successfully managed projects in a multi-disciplinary environment, from start to finish, you’ve the proven ability to make brilliant things happen. You love the outdoors and you understand the processes and procedures involved in delivering a project that involves groundworks, land management, contract management and securing planning permission. You’re a multitasker, naturally. You take challenges in your stride and pride yourself on delivering on time, on budget and to the highest standards. Passionate and great with people, you’ll use your first-class communication skills to engage and influence a wide range of stakeholders at all levels - from colleagues to contractors. Your enthusiasm will be inspiring and through collaboration and relationship-building, you’ll get everyone as excited about the Cycle Trails as you are.

Incredibly rewarding

We expect a lot, but we’ll offer a great deal in return, starting with stimulating and challenging work and the opportunity to help us achieve our bold ambitions. This is a demanding role, however, we recognise the importance of a work-life balance, and are committed to your continued development. You can also look forward to free admission to all our incredible places, plus a helpful 20% off at our shops, cafes and restaurants. But they’re just the benefits we can tell you about here.

About us

We’re a charity founded in 1895 by three people who saw the importance of our nation’s heritage and open spaces and wanted to preserve them for everyone to enjoy. Over 100 years later these values are still at the heart of everything we do. We want people of all ages and backgrounds to enjoy, be inspired by and love the places we look after as much as we do. We want everyone in England, Wales and Northern Ireland to feel like a member of the National Trust and, by 2020, we want to have grown our membership to more than five million.
