An opportunity has arisen within the Design and Development Department of a global leading-edge manufacturer at their site in Woking for an experienced, technically competent Senior Mechanical Design Engineer.

As a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer you would be responsible for projects through the full life cycle of a product, from initial conception to full production. The role involves full liaison with industrial designers, toolmakers and sub-contractors, on and off-site and with all levels of staff in the Company.

The role is hands on designing and requires the individual to be a creative and pro-active problem solver, who takes ownership throughout and uses his/her own initiative to resolve engineering issues.

The Design team, currently comprising four permanent designers, led by the Design and Development Director, has state of the art CAD & prototyping facilities including a rapid prototyping machine. Within the department there is also a Design Project Manager, Support Engineer, Research Design Engineer, Electronics/Software Programming Team of four engineers plus designated Toolroom and CAD support.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & EXPERIENCE:

Candidates must have experience in the design of precision mechanical products involving intricate mechanical assemblies and mechanisms incorporating plastic mouldings, die castings and machined components. Suitable previous experience may include the design of consumer type products such as mobile phones and similar telecoms equipment, printers, fax machines, copiers, white goods etc. Generally these are products of a similar scale and intricacy to own, using similar materials. Experience of tolerance studies, numerical design calculations and BOM costs is also required.

The ideal candidate must have a fundamental, solid understanding of mechanical engineering. For purposes of project supervision & efficient integration into our products a strong candidate will also have an appreciation of electronics, electrical assemblies, PCB layout and power requirements. For similar reasons familiarity of digital imaging technologies & optical design are desirable but not essential.

A successful candidate will be expected to be able to capture design decisions and highlight associated technical risks and seek and share good working practices to continuously improve their skill set and the overall working of the department. Ideally they should be an active member of IMechE or equivalent professional body.

Extensive experience of 3D CAD systems is essential, ideally with Pro/Engineer/CREO. Knowledge of relevant analysis tools is also highly desirable.

Candidates will have a minimum degree level qualification in Mechanical, Electromechanical or Optical Engineering.
