Optical Design Engineer

Edinburgh

Our client is a world leader in Imaging research and Design. They are looking to add an experienced Optical engineer to their team.

The Optical Design Engineer role primarily involves the design of VCSEL beam shaping optics and objective lenses for use in ToF systems operating in the near infra-red or visible wavelength range.

It will require a highly skilled and proficient use of non-sequential ray tracing simulation tools such as LightTools and Zemax to establish design performance, sensitivity to manufacturing variations, and provide yield estimations.

The Optical Design Engineer will be key in helping coordinate the manufacturing implementation of ST lens designs for prototyping and mass production in 3rd party manufacturers, and will need to engage in effective and efficient communication with suppliers on a daily basis.

The successful candidate will take a leading role in assisting the Technical Sourcing team in the selection of opto-mechanical manufacturing partners, evaluating their technology and determining their process capability for manufacturing and its suitability for ST lens designs. They will support mechanical engineers in tolerance, finite element and thermal analysis, and optimise the lens designs to accommodate and ease the assembly or module integration.

To be of interest you will have extensive industrial experience and a degree in physics/optics/engineering ideally with a post graduate qualification (PhD, EngD) in optics and/or photonics.

You will also possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills to enable you to work with an extended internal team as well as external component suppliers and with customers across multiple geographical locations. You will need to be a self-starter, able to operate autonomously with minimal supervision.

Key Skills and Experience

- Lens design and simulation (Zemax, Light Tools or similar)

- Radiometric and straylight simulation

- Opto-mechanical design

- Specification and use of LEDs and Laser diodes

- Time of flight systems

- MTF testing, Spectrometers, Image Quality testing

- Image processing algorithms

- 3D imaging
