Infrastructure Engineer - web infrastructure, hardware/software upgrades, - 6 months - Edinburgh - Up to £450 per day

The Company

Spring Technology's client, a public sector body in Edinburgh, is looking for an experienced Infrastructure Engineer to join them on an initial 6 month contract.

The client is currently going through an exciting period of change as a result of a large digital transformation project.

The Role: Infrastructure Engineer

As a successful Infrastructure Engineer, you will be crucial in the implementation, operation and maintenance of a large programme of web based systems.

Responsibilities include:

*Implementing and optimising development, testing, production and web infrastructure across a collection of systems in the programme

*Establishing monitoring tools and systems to detect problems in the operation of the web project

*Identifying risks to system security and performance and proposing solutions

*Working closely with release engineers to launch a continuous delivery approach to release management

*Launching a reporting solution to gather operational data from the current systems

*Managing the expectations of stakeholders and agreeing suitable SLA targets whilst reporting back on updates

*Monitoring end user experiences for the systems and ensuring the best possible performance at all times

*Overseeing the infrastructure support helpdesk function, ensuring the logging, prioritisation and resolution of reported issues

*Investigating areas of continuous improvement and preventative maintenance across the current systems

*Working closely with other teams in the negotiation of contracts with 3rd party vendors

*Installing services and supporting related activities during the software development life cycle

*Providing a consultative approach to other public sector organisations on similar digital transformation projects

Essential skills and experience will include:

*Extensive experience in web infrastructure and operating/supporting high traffic web applications

*Previous experience in deploying and optimising web application architecture including web servers, reverse proxy cashes, web accelerators, Linux, Java and relational database servers

*Demonstrable experience in cloud computing delivery models including SaaS, IaaS and PaaS

*Administering computer networks using TCP/IP, HTTP, DNS and SSL

*Task automation using Bash scripts

*Previous experience of configuration management tools including Puppet

*Agile and Waterfall methodologies in project management and software development

Desirable skills

*Previous use of continuous delivery methods including declarative system configuration, autonomic infrastructure and automated provisioning

*Deploying web applications in Amazon Web Services environments and using EC2, ELB, RDS, S3, Route53 and VPC

*Previous software development or testing exposure
