About the role
As a result of an increased portfolio of projects a vacancy exists within STFC’s Technical, Mechanical & Vacuum Engineering Group (TMVE) for a Vacuum Technician. TMVE is part of the Engineering Technology Centre (ETC) within the Technology Department at STFC’s Daresbury Laboratory. TMVE project manages and supports a wide spectrum of mechanical, technical and vacuum engineering, within a broad portfolio of STFC and external customer projects and deliverables.
You will have an understanding of Vacuum processes and techniques coupled with some knowledge of accelerator type vacuum technologies, such as leak detection, pressure measurement and pumping.
The post involves daily contact with the various technical staff, project team members, support staff and external collaborators and contractors. You will liaise with stakeholders within STFC such as ASTeC and external organizations and private contractors. You will be required to operate through meetings, individual contact via face to face interactions, telephone and emails with colleagues and customers at all levels. This post will report directly to a TMVE Vacuum Laboratory Manager.
Duties will include:
work as part of a team of 2 vacuum technicians and 1 vacuum engineer
to be able to repeatedly follow described processes of various tasks without deviation
manual handling of complex vacuum assemblies
delivery of processed items to STFC customers
work within and contribute to our ISO9001 quality system
after training, work with Residual Gas Analysis systems and work within the permit to work system
use computerised systems for input of task and employee related data, such as tasks carried out, time bookings, annual leave etc.
About You
You should have a good knowledge of the requirements of vacuum and accelerator type technologies. Experience in the use of vacuum equipment used on accelerator and scientific research equipment such as those used in our STFC Facilities such as ALICE and VELA.
You should also have knowledge of working in a safety critical environment, including experience of working under CDM regulations and permit to work systems.
You should be computer literate (evidenced by ECDL or similar) with skills and experience in use of MS Office will be required (may be tested at interview).
You need to be a proactive, self-motivated person with good communication skills, able to work in a dynamic environment. You must be able to work as part of a multidisciplinary team, but also demonstrate autonomy within their area of responsibility.
