SQL DBA - Glasgow

Our UK market leading client, who are experiencing rapid growth are looking for an experienced SQL DBA to join their team on a permanent basis. You will be responsible for providing technical support for the database environment including overseeing the development and organisation of the databases, working in a highly skilled and competent team of technology enthusiasts.

SQL DBA - Key Skills:

* Hands-on commercial experience with SSIS, DTS AND TSQL

* AIX, Oracle and/or Active Directory experience in alignment with the above

* Knowledge of writing TSQL queries to manipulate data from existing systems

* At least 3 years' SQL Database Administration experience

* Broad 2nd and 3rd line Infrastructure experience

* Awareness of Business Systems and Application Landscapes

* Proficient with server client computing and relation to database environments

* Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Certification is highly desirable, yet not essential

* ITIL v3 Foundation is also highly desirable, yet not essential

* Strong problem solving and analytical skills

* Strong customer service orientation

SQL DBA - Responsibilities:

* Database Management/Performance: Responsible for providing technical support for the database environment including overseeing the development and organisation of the databases

* Participate and contribute to SQL related application and infrastructure design and implementation.

* The DBA is challenged to work with architecture, application development and operations to help achieve a state-of-the-art environment that meets current and future business objectives

* Responsible for ongoing performance and tuning of databases. Actively checking for fragmentation, out of date statistics, correct use of indexes and optimise where necessary using SQL performance diagnostics and tools. Identify any long running transactions, any database locking or blocking and work to alleviate these bottlenecks to ensure smooth database running.

* Database Security: Ability to design and manage a secure database environment, developing and enforcing a security scheme for existing and new databases and ensuring that these comply to company security standards

* A good understanding of server level security and database level security is therefore required as well as a knowledge of database principles and security

* Work closely with UK Network & Security team to implement t best practice security standards across SQL estate

* Database Monitoring/Availability: Actively monitor the SQL Databases and the environment to ensure that these do not breach any thresholds which could impact the day to day running of business systems.

* Monitor integrity checks, backups, optimisation jobs and respond to job failure alerts. Put forward recommendations for monitoring tools and processes which could help in the identification of any issues and speed up administration tasks.

* Understand the factors that could affect Database Availability and provide a solution to avoid interruption to mission critical systems. Factors such as power failures, system crashes, and network failures should, therefore, be taken into account and a suitable clustered environment designed to accommodate the needs of the business. Also, ensure ongoing capacity in terms of memory and disk space for database growth and new database implementations.
