Job purpose

The Network Support engineer acts as a technical reference for identification and resolution of all complex network, and service affecting, faults on the GSM-R radio network (outside of network rail, GSM-R could be known as GSM2G/GSM 2.5G networks).

This includes resolution of issues related to network build, software upgrade and regression testing, software correction patches and associated hardware changes.

The Network Support Engineer also acts as the technical reference regarding the disaster recovery plans, including routine tests and evaluation.

Key Accountabilities

* Guidance and direction of network management engineers to resolve complex faults affecting the GSM-R network, including network build/rollout issues.

* Technical Support to the GSM-R network, including Level 2 support for maintenance contractors, and interface with Kapsch / Frequentis and HQ Engineering personnel, regarding issues affecting the network.

* Co-operation in the development of test procedures concerning the build/ rollout, and monitoring/ surveillance of the network.

* Recommend and monitor spares distribution for the GSM-R network.

* Initiate, and take responsibility for, special investigation reports regarding issues affecting the network.

* Technical reference for all Planned Works and possessions activities.

* Manage and test the disaster recovery plans, including TEC and FTN interfaces.

* Monitor system utilisation and initiate corrective actions where necessary.

* Recommend and monitor test equipment distribution.

Job Skills, Experience and Qualifications

Essential

Proven experience in a similar role, in a control room (24/7) environment.

Desirable

Previous railways telecoms/signalling experience preferred.

Degree in telecoms, or related discipline.
