Network Rail owns, manages and develops Britain's railway - the 20,000 miles of track, 40,000 bridges and viaducts, and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations (the largest of which we also run). In partnership with train operators we help people take more than 1.6bn journeys by rail every year - double the number of 1996 - and move hundreds of millions of tonnes of freight, saving almost 8m lorry journeys. We're investing £38bn in the railway by 2019 to deliver more frequent, more reliable, safer services and brighter and better stations.

The Safety, Technical & Engineering (STE) Group encompasses asset management, engineering, safety, health and wellness, and sustainable development, together with our key national change programmes including business critical rules, level crossing risk reduction, risk based maintenance and safety culture change.

Designed to reinforce the reality that safety is critical for every element of what we do, the STE Group delivers a 'Centre of Expertise' combining high quality safety, technical and engineering leadership to the business. With elements from Network Operations and Infrastructure Projects, it also provides a much clearer interface for the Routes.

Committed to engineering excellence, the Mechanical & Electrical Engineering (M&EE) function within Network Rail have an extensive remit, with responsibility for developing and maintaining engineering best practice for the company across plant, traction and electrification systems. This also includes being custodians of the associated standards, specifications and design authority, as well as providing quality assurance for compliance and safety.
