Project Information

Home Office Digital, Data and Technology is at the forefront of the transformation of government digital services. We research, design and build our services in-house, using small, multi-disciplinary teams in an agile working environment. It's an entirely new direction for government and this is a fantastic opportunity to positively influence how we do things at the Home Office.

Home Office Digital, Data and Technology work across the breadth of Home Office delivery, from passports to police, and visas to borders. We're looking for two graphic designers to join our expanding central design team.

Role Overview

As a Graphic Designer you will create print and digital communication materials to support wider service delivery. These materials could include posters and leaflets or diagrams, illustrations, sketches and other visualisations that are simple enough for everyone to understand.

You'll be excited by the challenge of creating digital services and communication materials that work across multiple channels, devices, browsers and platforms.

You'll be able to see the bigger picture as well as the finer detail. You'll be able to sketch and illustrate by hand. You'll be skilled in using specialist graphics packages to create polished visualisations and diagrams that communicate situations, problems or possible approaches.

You'll want to help the government transform the way it talks and communicates about services, so that teams can see how to make them more efficient, simpler, faster and easier.

Responsibilities

As a graphic designer you will:

* create visualisations of data, organisations and processes

* produce designs for posters, leaflets and other communication formats as required

* create sketches of situations or scenarios to help explain what is happening or what could happen in future

* provide information design that helps the team and stakeholders understand problems to be solved and work to be done

* challenge briefs to get to the underlying problem and communication need in order to plan how to solve it best

* create and share templates of work with the wider design community to help everyone be better at communicating information

* ensure that design work is consistent, both internally and with the rest of GOV.UK

* contribute to cross government design patterns and standards

Essential Criteria

* Know how to understand audiences, user needs and how to design information for them

* Be as comfortable sketching on paper as you are using Creative Suite or Sketch

* Be able to clearly communicate concepts and ideas to colleagues and senior stakeholders

* Welcome the constructive criticism of their work

* Know how to prepare design materials for screen and for print

* Work at pace and be at ease with rapidly changing deadlines, workloads and goals

* Have a design related degree, or relevant industry experience

Desirable Criteria

* Be able to code using HTML & CSS

* Have experience using research to iterate and validate design choices

* Have knowledge of GOV.UK, the Government Digital Service and service assessment
