A very well-funded radical UK robotics start-up with a huge contract in place from a major defense client is looking for a Principal Mechanical Design Engineer to join their rapidly growing team in Oxford. They need an innovative experienced designer to help them with a mission to combine nature with science, microelectronics and software engineering to produce new classes of robotic vehicles.

This role is suited to a design engineer with strong problem-solving skills and experience with the design of high-precision mechanisms. Their current highest-priority project will encounter many of the same challenges as design of UAVs and drones. Due to the size and weight requirements, the mechanical design needs to respond to numerous challenges in the materials used, in the efficiency of the power transmission as well as the tolerances in the design. The Principal Mechanical Design Engineer responsibilities will include:

* Design solutions for complex mechanisms which will address challenging requirements on size, weight and efficiency

* Engineer the new designs using 3D CAD and produce high quality drawings for the parts to be manufactured correctly.

* Participate hands on in the testing of prototypes and feedback observations in the design process

* Carry out a comprehensive mechanical design review including tolerance stack analysis, finite elements analysis, design animation, etc.

The Principal Mechanical Design Engineer must be capable of taking full design ownership and taking a leading role in the decision-making and problem-solving of the Mechanical Engineering team. To be eligible for this position you must:

* Be educated to at least degree level in Mechanical Engineering or related subject

* Have a minimum of 5 years relevant industry experience

* Highly experienced in the design of intricate mechanisms, such as found in Robotics, UAVs or even watchmaking

This is a unique opportunity to play a major part of a business which is creating a real buzz in the industry and has already been written up in the likes of TheEngineer, ArsTechnica and The Telegraph.

This position would provide a salary of £50,000 - £70,000 depending on length and relevance of experience, with flexibility possible for an ideal candidate. This role would also offer you Share Options in this industry-changing business, as well as company pension scheme and 25 days paid holiday.
