The Windows & VMWare Engineer is responsible for all Datacentres including all mechanical and engineering infrastructure to maintain the integrity of the datacentre environment.

The Windows & VMWare Engineer will be the systems architect and responsible for defining the Datacentre infrastructure strategies, managing changes to the Datacentre infrastructure through projects and other change requests ensuring the best integrity and fit of infrastructure to meet stakeholder and business requirements. Managing third party Datacentre infrastructure suppliers to meet service level agreements.

The post holder will manage a team that will evaluate, build, test, install and maintain equipment services and applications located in the Datacentres. This includes hardware based servers, Virtualised server estate, Storage networks and disc based storage systems (SAN).

The Windows & VMWare Engineer will ensure good maintenance and availability of equipment/applications based within the Datacentres and are managed to meet the complex business needs.

They are responsible for proactive prevention, business continuity planning/testing, and managing the resolution of unscheduled incidents/problems.

To support the existing storage and server infrastructure and help to provide a quality support service to all users. To install and manage installation of new IT systems and reconfigure existing ones.

Server and storage systems include but are not limited to the Trusts physical server & virtual infrastructure (VMware), Active Directory, storage (SAN), backup and disaster recovery systems.

Dependent on agreed working patterns between manager and employee, this post may be a Designated Night Worker post under the Working Time Regulations 1998.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

1.1. Responsible for the Datacentres, including management of the environment, equipment, systems, and applications contained therein, ensuring system availability is maintained. Manage and organise the physical locations of the equipment for best performance in the Datacentres.

1.2. Principal architect for the Trusts server and storage Infrastructure, identifying service needs & requirements ensuring effective capacity planning.

1.3. Lead on the planning, testing, and implementation of changes to equipment, systems and services held within the Datacentre through approved change control processes.

1.4. Lead on the creation, approval and control of Datacentre systems architecture design for all major change programmes and ensure the systems align with the systems strategy.

1.5. Responsible for maintaining the security aspects and integrity of the Datacentre, physically and virtually.

1.6. Ensuring environmental monitoring and equipment health checks are undertaken. Anomalies are identified and dealt with in a timely manner.

1.7. Project manage complex tasks for new and existing systems ensuring objectives are met in a timely manner.

1.8. To be responsible for the strategic implementation and support of the Unix systems to facilitate national targets.

1.9. Responsible for the development configuration and management of the physical server & virtual Infrastructure, Active Directory, storage, backup and disaster recovery systems for resiliency, ensuring maximum uptime (to achieve the national industry target of 99.999%).

1.10. To be responsible for the development, installation, maintenance, monitoring and performance of the VMware infrastructure and Storage Area Network within the Datacentres.

1.11. To be accountable for all backup systems on the network ensuring business continuity and development of incident response plans and proactive problem management.

1.12. Research and investigate security, fault logs of physical servers, VMware infrastructure, Active Directory, Group Policy, DNS, DHCP and backup systems and act on the information accordingly to resolve issues.

1.13. Lead the monitoring & progress of fault resolution and initiating escalation procedures as necessary, evaluating subsequent customer satisfaction.

1.14. To instigate and plan projects from start to finish including test and implementation plans, with built in contingencies, detailing resource & budgetary requirements to achieve the finished goal within project timescales and costs.

1.15. Responsible for liaison with 3rd party suppliers on highly complex technical issues which may be spread across multiple vendors.

1.16. Be responsible for problem management requiring calls to third party support service providers ensuring issues are correctly recorded and resolved.

1.17. Responsible for the negotiation & purchase of complex IT solutions from multiple companies.

1.18. To ensure projects and systems meet relevant industry standards, influencing other IT staff to follow suit.

1.19. Coordinate work streams with other members of the IT Team to ensure successful completion of agreed projects.

1.20. Conduct project presentations to the IT Team and others, giving updates on a frequent basis agreed for each project.

1.21. Communicate highly complex technical subjects to technical and non technical trust employees at all levels.

1.22. Provide complex technical advice to user departments and IT colleagues/managers.

1.23. Ensure all server and storage infrastructure is compliant with Information Governance recommendations/regulations.
