Coxswain Mechanic

Seahouses, Northumberland

£25,156 - £29,595 (dependent on experience)

Our client is the charity that saves lives at sea. An excellent opportunity has arisen for a Coxswain Mechanic to join their team in Northumberland.

Our client’s lifeboat station in Seahouses has been in service for just under 200 years, and the last 150 years has seen it form a key element of their North-East operations.

At Seahouses, there are two standard operational craft, a Mersey-class all-weather vessel and a D-class inflatable that is perfect for in-shore rescues.

This is an exciting time to join the team in Seahouses as, in 2018, they are due to replace the Tamar-class all-weather lifeboat with a new Shannon-class. These incredible lifeboats have been developed especially for our client and are jet-propelled for use in more shallow water and come with the most advanced equipment available in lifesaving.

What’s more, they will also be replacing the D-class inflatable, meaning you will have the chance to gain further experience with all manner of water-borne craft and get to grips with some advanced technology.

As the Coxswain Mechanic, you will be tasked with ensuring that equipment at our client’s Seahouses Lifeboat station is in perfect working order and is ready for use.

In this dual role, you will also act as Coxwain and commander of the all-weather lifeboat. This is currently a Mersey-class 38-foot vessel with a range of 180 miles.

Working in the North Sea brings with it a variety of challenges that are not normally experienced in day-to-day working life and so you will seek to ensure that the craft are ready and capable of handling the roughest and most challenging situations.

You’ll work in-line with our client’s regulations and instructions to make sure everything is up-to-scratch and in perfect working order. As a member of the Operations Team, you will also support operational management and the administration of the lifeboat station.

As the commander of the all-weather vessel, you will take charge of rescues, manage your crew and ensure the safety of everyone aboard. You will oversee the launch and recovery of the ship, and the trial and testing of new equipment.

Interested? To be considered, you will need:

- An RYA Yacht master certification plus CoBT operational pass out; Command of the Lifeboat and CoBT for Station Mechanic

- A Marine and/or Mechanical Engineering apprenticeship or equivalent to NVQ level 4, or suitable experience plus CoBT Station Mechanic’s operational pass out

- Thorough maritime and/or engineering knowledge and the ability to command, lead a crew and safely operate and handle vessels up to 20 metres in length

- Knowledge of RNLI and/or SAR lifeboat operations

An articulate leader, as the Coxswain Mechanic, you will also need to be hands-on in your approach with excellent communication and team building skills. Dedication and passion for the sea will also be key attributes.

Please note, the closing date for applications is the 2nd July 2017.

Our client’s staff and volunteers have been saving lives at sea without prejudice for nearly 200 years. They respect and value diversity of background, skills and perspectives within their teams, and consider it essential to help deliver a world-class lifesaving service. They are an inclusive organisation and welcome applications from everyone. In addition to having the skills needed for the role, they also look for applicants who share their commitment to living their values (trustworthy, courageous, selfless, and dependable), and helping work towards their goal of halving drowning in the UK and Ireland by 2024. This involves a growing commitment to preventative action, using expertise to work in partnership with communities locally, nationally and internationally to prevent drowning.
