Data Scientist (Up to 15 Month Contract)

Poole, Dorset

£35,284 - £41,511 pro rata

Our client is a charity that has been saving lives at sea for over 190 years. They are in the midst of fast-paced, transformational change that will allow them to save more lives than ever in new and creative ways.

They have embarked on a programme to transform data and analytics across the organisation and, as such, our client is now looking for a Data Scientist to join their team on a contract lasting up to 15 months.

Our client relies on quality analysis to make operational and commercial decisions that ultimately allow more lives to be saved and data science plays a crucial part of this service.

Joining a talented and hard-working team, you’ll have the chance to make a real difference within the organisation and help our client to continue saving lives at sea.

As a Data Scientist, you’ll specify, transform and analyse data to help develop the processes and work of our client’s Operations Research Unit (ORU).

The ORU collects, manages and analyses data on the organisation’s lifesaving activity and turns it into actionable insight for the charity’s decision makers.

Currently, the ORU is working closely with the organisation’s Data & Analytics programme to help improve the way that our client manages, governs, and derives analysis from their data assets.

You’ll join a multi-function programme team that will implement data and analytical platforms, make data assets available on these platforms and ensure that teams are able to get the most value out of this data.

To be considered, you will need:

- Data science experience, gained in an operational environment

- Experience of data cleansing and transformation, including writing ETLs using Microsoft SQL Server Integration Services, working with data warehouses and using data mining techniques

- Previous experience of programming using languages such as SQL, Python or R

- Expertise in data science and/or analysis methodologies

- A qualification in data science, ideally degree level

Organised and analytical, as a Data Scientist, you’ll have an excellent eye for detail and strong communication skills. You’ll also need an organised and flexible approach, as well as an interest in the practical uses of data to inform good decision-making.

Please note, the closing date for applications is 13th August 2017.

Our client’s staff and volunteers have been saving lives at sea without prejudice for nearly 200 years. They respect and value diversity of background, skills and perspectives within their teams, and consider it essential to help the organisation deliver a world-class lifesaving service. Our client is an inclusive organisation and welcome applications from everyone. In addition to having the skills needed for the role, our client also looks for applicants who share their commitment to living their values (trustworthy, courageous, selfless, and dependable), and helping them work towards their goals of halving drowning in the UK and Ireland by 2024. This involves a growing commitment to preventative action, using expertise to work in partnership with communities locally, nationally and internationally to prevent drowning.
