Station Mechanic (Arbroath Lifeboat Station)

Arbroath Lifeboat Station

£25,407 - £29,891 (dependent on experience)

If you’re a marine or mechanical engineer who can handle a boat in adverse sea conditions and lead a passionate team, this is a fantastic opportunity to take on a unique and vital role.

Our client is the charity that saves lives at sea. An excellent opportunity has arisen for a Station Mechanic to join their team at the Arbroath lifeboat station.

Established in 1803, Arbroath is one of the oldest lifeboat stations in Scotland and the last Scottish station with a slipway. Currently, our client’s station is home to a Mersey class all-weather lifeboat and a D class inshore lifeboat.

Mersey-class and D class lifeboats form the backbone of our client’s fleet and are the reliable workhorses that are prevalent at lifeboat stations across the British Isles. What’s more, the Mersey class are in the process of being replaced by state-of-the-art Shannon-class lifeboats, meaning you will be able to get your hands on the latest kit that has been developed especially for our client.

You will have the opportunity to help shape a lifesaving service in Arbroath, share your knowledge with a hard-working team and ensure that our client’s world-class equipment is always ready for an emergency.

As a Station Mechanic, you will ensure that the lifeboats at Arbroath station are always ready for service, as well as crewing the lifeboat and taking charge of machinery at sea.

In this key role, the majority of your time will be divided between maintaining the lifeboats and their equipment and training and assessing volunteer crew members, ensuring they meet the organisation’s high standards.

You’ll inspire and motivate crew members, take them on seagoing exercises, identify ways they can improve and impart your valuable knowledge, so that when an emergency does occur, you, your crew and your lifeboat will be prepared.

What’s more, as there’s always a high degree of interest from the public, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to meet them and share your station’s work.

To be considered for this exciting position, you must have:

- Thorough maritime knowledge and experience of maintaining high speed diesel engines and ancillary systems found on fast boats up to 20 metres in length

- Knowledge of RNLI and/or SAR Lifeboat Operations

- A marine and/or mechanical engineering apprenticeship or equivalent qualification to NVQ level 4 standard, or suitable experience plus CoBT Station Mechanic’s operational pass out

Due to the requirements of this role, the Station Mechanic will be required to meet the our client’s medical and eyesight requirements. You will also need to live within close proximity to the lifeboat station, as you will be required to be on call, when not on leave.

To have passed out as an RNLI Coxswain or hold a commercial command certificate for vessels less than 24 metres would be beneficial to your application.

Please note, the closing date for this role is the 28th August 2017 and interviews are scheduled for the 4th September 2017.

Our client’s staff and volunteers have been saving lives at sea without prejudice for nearly 200 years. They respect and value diversity of background, skills and perspectives within their teams, and consider it essential to help them deliver a world-class lifesaving service. They are an inclusive organisation and welcome applications from everyone. In addition to having the skills needed for the role, they also look for applicants who share their commitment to living their values (trustworthy, courageous, selfless, and dependable), and helping work towards their goals of halving drowning in the UK and Ireland by 2024. This involves a growing commitment to preventative action, using expertise to work in partnership with communities locally, nationally and internationally to prevent drowning.
