Job title: UI Designer

Location: Oxfordshire

Start date: Immediately

Fixed duration: Permanent

Wage: 24,00032,000

Hours: Full-time

Role Overview:

We seek an enthusiastic user interface designer to collaborate with our growing informatics team on building responsive browser-based user interfaces for both internal and customer-facing web services. The appointee will work closely both with our scientific staff and with our in-house web development team to specify, design and, where appropriate, help to implement user experience for web apps targeted primarily. The appointee will work primarily on an interface for our internal laboratory information management system (LIMS), but will also make frequent contributions to the look and feel of our customer-facing website, our marketing communications, and our suite of genetic engineering web apps.

The Applicant Sought:

The successful applicant will have a strong background in graphic design for web apps, and an excellent command of Adobe Creative Cloud (especially InDesign and Illustrator.) The successful applicant will be expected to transform end-user requirements lists into attractive and user-friendly web app layout designs.

A portfolio of web design work is highly desirable. Applicants with less well-developed portfolios are encouraged to demonstrate their flair for design with in-progress side-projects, print work, personal websites (e.g. blogs, Tumblr, Pintrest), or similar.

The successful applicant will also have an excellent command of HTML 5 and CSS 3 (with LESS or SASS), be comfortable with PSD2HTML tasks, and have some familiarity with modern web development build systems (e.g. Gulp, Grunt or similar.) Demonstrable knowledge of one or more CSS libraries (e.g. Bootstrap 3 or 4, Semantic UI, Bulma or similar) is highly advantageous.

Experience working with JavaScript (ECMAScript 5 and above), jQuery, and at least one high-level app framework (e.g. AngularJS, ReactJS, Vue.js or similar) is desirable, though not required.

The successful applicant will have an appreciation of the need for cross-browser testing, and should be able to set up and use a testing environment to demonstrate that their design implementations have good cross-browser compatibility.

Good written and verbal communication skills are essential; the successful applicant will spend a significant portion of their time developing their design ideas in direct conversation with our scientists and our business development team.

Knowledge of biological sciences is not required. Nevertheless, an interest in and willingness to learn about the basics of genetic engineering would be looked on favourably.

The Benefits Offered:

Work alongside scientists and engineers in an energetic, stimulating and interdisciplinary environment to help build a Sonovate 2016 Top 50 Fastest Growing company at the forefront of the biotechnology revolution.

Great opportunities for career progression and personal development. Let us invest in you with generous allowances for training courses, conferences and technical meetups.

Assume responsibility for and ownership of your projects from day one. Know that your work will have a clear and visible impact on our day-to-day operations.

Twenty-five days plus bank holidays annual leave, frequent company away days, flexible working hours, a relaxed and casual office culture, and an employer-matched pension scheme.
