An experienced and hands on Application Development Manager is required by a leading UK education company to shape and direct its application development function. The ideal candidate will have managed small development teams and have an extensive development background ideally in both Microsoft, Oracle and PHP platforms. You will need to be an excellent communicator, coder and decision maker.

The position is home based in the UK, ideally within commuting distance of Manchester and with frequent travel to London. This role will suit someone who likes being able to manage their own time and priorities. You will be joining a talented IT team which is undergoing significant growth and change.

The Application Development Manager will: -

- Manage the application development function for a large portfolio of systems

- Working with analysts manage the requirements specifications, design and system testing of internally developed systems

- Own the application workstack, ensuring priorities in the team are set, resources are assigned and releases are managed efficiently

- Coach and mentor developers

- Define, plan, budget and manage milestones for the delivery of software releases

- Ensure that applications development contributes to goals set for systems quality and maintainability

- Undertake some development

You should have:

- Experience as an applications development manager ideally managing teams across the full development stack

- A solid development background, ideally with strong skills in C#, .net, Java (JSP), JavaScript, PHP, and CSS

- A development background based on large, enterprise scale projects, ideally in a corporate environment

Web services - REST and SOAP

- Windows Server and Linux experience

- Experience of Source Configuration Management including version control software e.g. SVN or CVS

- Knowledge of application developer tools including Visual Studio and Oracle Developer

- Familiarity with DevOps and continuous integration tools such as Eclipse, Maven etc.

- Some familiarity with ETL tools, ideally Informatica

- Strong estimating and planning skills
