Support the technological needs of the UK’s rural industries

2 years fixed term contract.

At the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra), we take responsibility for protecting the environment and supporting Britain’s rural economies. With our remit including the fishing and farming industries, we are now facing the fast-paced challenge of preparing for the UK’s exit from the European Union, including the impact this will have on the digital, data and technology interfaces used within these fields. As such, we have devised The DDTS EU Exit Programme, which is overseeing five work-streams dedicated to: International trade (import and export); Essential biosecurity; Future Farming support; Chemicals and Pesticides; and Other Applications. Joining us on one of these fascinating work-streams, you will play a crucial role in enhancing the success of our projects.

Adopting an agile approach to the management of these projects, you will take responsibility for ensuring your ventures are on target to meet the desired outcomes. Applying your meticulous standards to every detail, you will manage key relationships, controlling expenditure and managing any risks. Applying your agile development knowledge to the project, you will also anticipate the challenges presented by any dependencies, working with colleagues to ensure solutions are achieved. To make the most of this role, you will therefore have knowledge of managing complex projects in an agile environment, with the ability to use formal planning tools. A flexible team player, you will have good budgeting capabilities, ideally gained in a multi-disciplinary team within the public sector. If you have a relevant qualification, that would be an added bonus, though isn’t strictly necessary. What is crucial is that you have the flexibility to adapt to the needs of the project - and a passion for doing something genuinely beneficial for Britain.
