If you are an experienced software engineer wanting to step into a technical leadership role, or already a leader in another technical area, with significant familiarity with software delivery, this is an exciting opportunity to play a key role in the digital transformation of a leading government organisation.

About the UK Hydrographic Office (UKHO)

UKHO is an executive agency, sponsored by the Ministry of Defence. We work with a wide range of data partners to chart the world's oceans in order to develop and serve world leading software and data solutions to commercial shipping companies, navies and maritime organisations. Our products ensure safe navigation and global trade efficiency and support other marine activities including economic development, environmental protection, resource exploration and utilisation, scientific research and security and defence.

The role

As the Head of Software Engineering, you will be responsible for the management of the UKHO's software engineering capability to produce internal/external digital services and products, efficiently and effectively.

You will encourage the use of use of modern software engineering practices across the organisation and define the strategic direction for software engineering, actively engaging with the software engineering community at all levels, managing appropriate resourcing for projects and leading change in methods of delivery.

To fulfil the UKHO's requirements for software delivery, some work will be outsourced, and you will need to build good working relationships with external software delivery suppliers/partners. You will also have the opportunity to build and maintain collaborations and relationships across government/MoD and with third parties that may be contracted to deliver specific capabilities or research.

What we are looking for

A solid understanding of modern software engineering and DevOps practices and solution delivery is essential. You will also need to be able to understand and motivate software engineers; you do not need to be directly hands on.

If you are an advocate of modern software engineering practices and enjoy leading and shaping technical teams and are excited about being empowered to deliver in an organisation which is ‘up for transformation' we would be delighted to hear from you.

And in return?

We will actively empower you to develop yourself and provide flexible working practices for a healthy work/life balance. We offer a range of benefits to support your lifestyle, including generous leave allowance, a lift-share scheme and regular training and development opportunities.
